Ironton Fighting Tigers

Alma Mater Song

Dear Old Ironton High:  As a 1975 graduate of Ironton High School and a three-time baseball letterman, I am proud of the school's athletic program.    In 1972, Ironton brought home a state championship in baseball.   In 1979 and 1989, Ironton won state championships in football.   Recently, the golf team has produced multiple state championships in both individual and team events.

Ironton Football:  In a community that has suffered so many economic setbacks, the football team has been a rallying force for the community.   Around Ohio, people are aware of the gridiron accomplishments of the players and coaching staff.   Besides being a key entertainment source, the football program has helped maintain a level of community pride.    Like all Irontonians, I can't wait until the first kickoff.   Go Tigers!

Ironton High School and the NFL:  The forerunners of the NFL were teams like the Ironton Tanks.   The exploits of the Tanks can be found by visiting  Big Time Football in Ironton, Ohio, football research, football research. com, and sports library.  The Tigers still play at the stadium used by the Tanks.  Tanks Memorial Stadium has received a historical marker from the State of Ohio (see website about the stadium).

Ironton High School has seen several graduates play in the NFL.   George McAfee, Chicago Bears and Duke University, was a star in the NFL as a halfback.   George McAfee is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.    Please take a look at my recent interview with Mr. McAfee to learn more about Ironton High's most famous graduate.  2003 Interview

Coy Bacon (Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Washington Redskins) and Danny Pride (Chicago Bears) both had nice professional careers.  Bacon was a fierce pass rusher and probably has the single season record for sacks.  However, sacks are a relatively new statistic for the NFL and were not counted when Bacon played.   For more information about Coy Bacon, please view Sports Illustrated CNN.com.   After manning one of the linebacker spots next to Dick Butkus, Danny Pride is now coaching football.

There remains a need to enshrine former Ironton High educator Glenn Presnell in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.   The former star of the Ironton Tanks, Portsmouth Spartans, and Detroit Lions is well-deserving of that honor..    Please take a look at my interviews with Mr. Presnell to learn more about this great man.   2002 Interview

Ironton Sports Day:   The legendary Woody Hayes tops the list of those honored.   Kenny Fritz, former All-American offensive guard at Ohio State, is just one of the former Tigers honored for their exploits.   Past honorees also include George McAfee and Coy Bacon.   For decades, this has been a major community event that has attracted many famous people to our hometown.
